A common question often repeated is why Orange County must provide translated election materials and bi-lingual support in Spanish, Chinese, Korean and Vietnamese. Federal law requires that we provide support for those registered voters who request this assistance. This means that we must be prepared by offering these materials even if a voter does not request assistance in a covered polling place.
The U.S. Department of Justice monitors covered jurisdictions and enforces the requirements of the Voting Rights Act. We work closely with our community partners to ensure full compliance with the provisions of the Act and the 2006 reauthorization.
Voting jurisdictions must provide language support when they meet the threshold of coverage. This coverage is determined by using data collected in the American Community Survey.
