After the close of candidate filing, contests are eligible for an extended filing period of 5 extra days if the incumbent fails to file. This does not apply, however, if the district has recently changed to elect by areas within the district, and has not had an election for those districts previously. The following are contests not eligible for an extended filing period for the upcoming November 5, 2024 election:
When eligible incumbents do not file for re-election the filing period is extended. During the extended filing period for the 2022 Statewide General Election, any qualified candidates, other than incumbents are eligible to file.
This release was corrected on August 15, 2022 to remove the offices of Rancho Santiago Community College District Trustee Area 4 and Irvine Unified School District Trustee Area 4 from the list of contests that had the candidate filing period extended.

Any qualified person, other than the incumbent, can now file the Nomination Papers until 5:00 p.m. on March 16, 2022 in the office of the Registrar of Voters, 1300 South Grand Avenue, Building C, Santa Ana, California.

The portal allows candidates to start the Candidate Filing process and download many of the required documents, prior to filing the documents at the Registrar of Voters’ office.
