Orange County’s Vote Center Lab: Ideal Test Environment for Safe Voting

The first of its kind in the United States, the Vote Center Lab will support voting and voter education for the November 3, 2020 Presidential General Election and beyond.

SANTA ANA, CA – July 30, 2020 – The Registrar of Voters is announcing the opening of its 1,125 square foot Vote Center Lab. As a fully functional, permanent replica of an in-person voting location, the Vote Center Lab was built to serve multiple purposes, such as testing processes and procedures, training election staff, educating the general public, and supporting research efforts in a controlled environment. Its timely completion has allowed the Registrar of Voters to test new processes and other changes to existing operations necessary for the November 3, 2020 Presidential General Election in light of COVID-19.

Within the first month, the Vote Center Lab has already served as a testing site to determine the impact of physical distancing and proper cleaning and disinfecting procedures on wait times for voters. The Vote Center Lab will also be incorporated into training, so that every Vote Center Customer Service Representative will have hands-on practice and experience in a Vote Center environment prior to stepping into an actual Vote Center.

The Vote Center Lab is available for tours on an appointment basis; public health and safety precautions will be required to ensure safe visits to the site. To see photos of the Vote Center Lab, please visit the Registrar of Voters’ Election Photo Gallery.

Quote by Registrar of Voters Neal Kelley:

"With COVID-19, it is more important than ever to have a testing environment like our Vote Center Lab to run test simulations and train election workers to ensure voting is safe, secure, and accessible. Every effort will be made to guarantee that all voters who visit a Vote Center have a positive experience that promotes health and safety.”

All voters will receive a ballot for the November 3, 2020 Presidential General Election – allowing them to vote safely at home – and all voters can check their registration, re-register, and register to vote at ocvote.com.
