What is the Ballot Drop Box Strike Force?

Introduced in 2020, Ballot Drop Boxes have become one of the most popular ways for Orange County voters to cast their ballots. Each election, the Registrar of Voters must ensure that all Ballot Drop Boxes located throughout the county are closed and secured when the voting period ends on Election Night. To accomplish this, the Registrar of Voters created the Ballot Drop Box Strike Force. The Registrar’s office recruits hundreds of civic-minded county employee volunteers to be deployed to every Ballot Drop Box around the county on Election Day. We depend on the commitment and professionalism of our fellow county employees to make Election Day a success.

Duties of the Ballot Drop Box Strike Force

The primary task of the Strike Force is to close and lock all Ballot Drop Boxes promptly at 8 pm on Election night. Other duties include:

  • Assisting with traffic control and line management at an assigned Ballot Drop Box
  • Receiving vote-by-mail ballots from voters
  • Ensuring electioneering is not taking place within 100 feet of the Ballot Drop Box
  • Picking up and returning keys and other supplies from a designated Collection Center

*Please note: Ballot Drop Box Strike Force members do not transport ballots.
