Candidate Filing begins July 15
Starting Monday, July 15 those persons interested in running for one of about 125 local school and special district offices up for election in the 2024 Presidential General Election can begin the candidate filing process online or at the Registrar of Voters’ office.
To view the full list of school and special district offices on the ballot for the November 5, 2024 Presidential General Election visit: ocvote.gov/elections/whats-on-the-ballot.
To qualify for one of the offices up for election, a candidate shall be a registered voter in the district and, if applicable, in the trustee area or director division.
Eligible citizens can download many of the required candidacy documents by using the Registrar of Voters Candidate Filing Portal on our website (ocvote.gov/candidates), prior to filing the documents at the Registrar of Voters’ office.
The Registrar of Voters also issues candidacy documents at its office, 1300 S. Grand Ave., Building C in Santa Ana, Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Candidates must file these completed forms in that office no later than 5 p.m. on Friday, August 9.
For more information about candidate filing including how to schedule an appointment, visit ocvote.gov/candidates or call (714) 567-7600.
Those interested in running for one of about 80 city offices up for election must pick up and file candidate documents at the appropriate City Clerk’s office during regular business hours.

If you need to register to vote for the first time or update your address, name, or political party, it’s easy and can be completed online.
You may also use a paper Voter Registration Form that can be found at the OC Registrar of Voters, public libraries, city and county offices, California Department of Motor Vehicles offices, and at U.S. Post Offices.
If you moved since the last election and want to make sure we don’t mail a ballot to your old address, please update your registration by September 6.
The deadline to newly register and to be mailed a ballot is October 21.
If you miss the regular voter registration deadline, California permits same-day registration and voting, also known as Conditional Voter Registration.
You can still register and vote in this election at any Vote Center when they open on October 26.

Maintaining Accurate Voter Rolls
Voter registration records are updated daily based on information provided by voters and official government sources. These updates include new registrations, changes of address, selections of a political party preference, requests for election materials in a language other than English, and notifications that a voter has died.
The OC Registrar of Voters also regularly compares the information on the voter rolls to databases kept by third parties such as consumer credit reporting agencies, review voter registration files for potentially duplicate records, and encourage voters to re-register when we notice a change in their signatures.
These updates add up to more than 700,000 registration changes annually in Orange County, increasing to more than 1 million in a Presidential Election year. Learn more: ocvote.gov/list-maintenance |
